| DESCRIPTION |
|
As one of the least environmentally and culturally degraded areas remaining in the western Caribbean region, the small islands of Old Providence and Santa Catalina offer you a wonderful destination.
The marine ecosystems are unique in the wider Caribbean for species diversity and intactness. The true barrier reef is 32 km long and is one of the largest reefs in the western hemisphere. According to Geister (1996) this reef covers an overall area of 255 square kilometers.
Below sea level, a mask and a snorkel will reveal a self-contained universe of coral, fish, crustaceans and a host of intriguing organisms. And on many nights between March and June you might be lucky enough to witness the streets filled with land crabs moving towards the ocean to lay their eggs.
It is a combination of things Caribbean, a tiny crucible where Spain, England and Africa have fused. Native islanders speak both Spanish and English.
Enjoy a friendly and informal atmosphere; relax while someone else spoils you with a special breakfast, let the sea air restore you. Read a book, watch the sunset on the waves, enjoy the pristine environment, conserved specially for you. |
