Bed & Breakfast Erstef is situated in the heart of Amsterdam on the Waterlooplein. This square has an important history for both Amsterdam and the Jewish community. The Waterlooplein was created by closing 2 canals: the Leprozengracht and the Houtgracht. The Jewish merchants were forced to move their market from the Jodenbreestraat to this new square. In 1893 it became a day market opened 6 days a week. World War 2 brought an end to the market. The area was deserted and it was only until the 50-ties that the market started to regain some of its previous popularity. In the sixties and seventies it was a meeting place for hippies. It is now a modern market with over a hundred stands that sell a variety of new and old stuff.
There are many attractions around the Waterlooplein such as the Opera house, the Rembrandt house, a Diamond factory and the Jewish Museum. It is also very close to the (gay) nightlife of Amsterdam, the shopping centre and the Rembrandtplein, another busy nightspot of Amsterdam.
Your host, Erick Tell, born in Guadeloupe, has lived in many places all over Europe, such as London, Barcelona and Paris and has made his home in Amsterdam for many years, because, according to him, it is a wonderful place to be. It offers visitors a great combination of modern, trendy, weird, village like qualities with all the comforts of a cosmopolitan city. He will be more than happy to help you plan your days during your visit.
The apartment is situated on the 3rd floor of a building opposite of the market and the Opera house. During the day you can hear the market sounds of people bargaining for good deals. During the evening it is pleasantly quiet. The marketplace is empty and there is no traffic. The bedroom is situated at the back of the apartment overlooking a courtyard as you find in Paris and other south European cities. It is a 14 square meter room with basic comforts. It is great for gay people and their friends who want to be in the middle of the nightlife, the shopping centre and some important tourist attractions. There is a bathroom with a shower, a kitchen you can use for snacks, reading and a balcony to watch the busy market during the day. There is only 1 guestroom, so you have plenty of privacy and quietness. |
